The GRAIL 3.5" valved exhaust system, compatible with the VW Golf 8 R (engine code DNFG), delivers a noticeable presence in any situation. Legal, high-quality, and fully integrated – perfect for discerning performance drivers.

The Golf R already packs a punch straight from the factory – but VW deliberately holds back the sound. With its 3.5-inch diameter, the GRAIL exhaust system bypasses the factory sound dampening and delivers what the 2.0 TSI is truly capable of: a turbocharged, powerful four-cylinder sound with an unmistakable backfire character in Sport mode. In cruising mode, the system remains discreet – the signature GRAIL delta between loud and quiet.

Handmade in Germany, L304 stainless steel, ECE type-approved. No registration required within the EU. Plug-and-play connection to the factory VW flap control – no extra module, no remote control.

Configuration details

The Golf 8 R received several technical updates with its facelift in July 2024, which is why there are two model generations in the configurator. You can also choose the downpipe connection and tailpipe variant.

• Model generation: Pre-facelift (until 07/2024) or facelift (from 07/2024)
• Downpipe connection: On a standard or HJS downpipe
• Tailpipe variant: 5 different designs (see below)

Downpipe connection – stock or HJS

• A series: You're using the factory downpipe and want to connect the GRAIL exhaust system to it. Standard choice for most Golf 8 R models.
• To HJS: You already have an HJS downpipe installed (e.g., as part of a Stage 2 setup). In this case, the GRAIL will be manufactured with a compatible interface for the HJS.

Tailpipe options – 5 designs to choose from

The Golf 8 R offers an exceptionally wide selection of tailpipes. Each design significantly alters the rear appearance:

• Double oval (165 × 100 mm) – stainless steel: Sporty and elegant, with two wide oval tailpipes – a classic performance statement in an OEM-Plus look.
• Double oval (165 × 100 mm) – Black: Same shape, understated appearance – ideal in combination with a black package or dark rims
• 4-flow round (100 mm) – stainless steel: Four round tailpipes – maximum presence at the rear, classic tuning look
• 4-flow round (100 mm) – Black: Four round tailpipes in matte black – aggressive and eye-catching.
• 4-flow round (100 mm) – Carbon: Four round tailpipes with genuine carbon fiber covering – premium look, matches carbon fiber add-on parts at the rear.

Material & Construction

Completely made of LHandcrafted from 304 stainless steel. CNC-precisely milled flaps made from solid material, acoustically tuned in the GRAIL sound lab specifically for the 2.0 TSI DNFG engine. Flow-optimized pipe routing ensures minimized back pressure. The carbon fiber tailpipe version uses high-quality, genuine carbon fiber sleeves, not imitations.

Flap control – as is usual with VW

The GRAIL system completely takes over the factory-installed VW exhaust flap control of your Golf 8 R. This means you can continue driving with your familiar driving profiles; Sport mode opens the flaps as before. No additional controls, no remote.

• 50% deposit upon order – we pay in advance for you at GRAIL
• The remaining balance is payable only after we receive the equipment.
• Installation by our specialists including functional testing of the flap control

Important: The deposit payment option applies exclusively to bookings including installation and is only available via prepayment/bank transfer. PayPal or other payment methods are not accepted for this service.

Swiss suitability assessment

Upon request, you can receive a Swiss suitability assessment for the GRAIL system for an additional fee. If interested, simply contact support.

• VW Golf 8 R Performance (with DNFG engine)

Not suitable for: Golf 8 GTI / GTI Clubsport (2.0 TSI, but different engine code and exhaust system), Golf 7 R (completely different vehicle). Separate GRAIL systems are available in our shop for these models.

Registration-free thanks to ECE type approval – applies to all EU vehicles with standard registration. For imported vehicles with a different operating permit, please check registration requirements before ordering. The ECE type approval certificate should be kept in the vehicle's glove compartment.
